The Founding Foodie

He wrote the Declaration of Independence. He also had very strong opinions about vanilla.

Sometime in the 1780s, a man sat down and wrote an 18-step recipe for vanilla ice cream.

Eighteen steps. For ice cream. He was not messing around.

He'd discovered the dessert while serving as American Minister to France and decided — along with liberty, democracy, and architecture — that this was also coming home with him.

He served it regularly at his Virginia estate. Guests who had never tasted it were reportedly stunned. He considered this a personal victory.

The same man wrote the Declaration of Independence, served two terms as president, and founded the University of Virginia.

He also really, really liked ice cream.

Who was he?

Need a nudge? He's on the $2 bill. He's on Mount Rushmore. He wrote something in 1776 that you definitely had to memorize in school.

Challenge Complete!
